Sonu Nigam Recalls How Anu Malik LIED To Him When Called For Work; Singer Says, ‘Naatak Karte The, Would Pretend That He Is Abu Malik’
Bollywood singer and composer Sonu Nigam is one of the most sought-after musicians in the music industry. Over the years he has left a lasting impression on his fans with his mesmerising and soulful voice. Having made his debut with Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Refugee, he has always been vocal about his relationship with composer Anu Malik. In a recent interview, he recalled the time when the musician would prank and lie to him about his identity when he used to call him for work during his struggling days.

Speaking about his initial days in the music industry, Sonu mentions that he used to set out on his two-wheeler and stop at phone booths so he could seek opportunities for work by making calls. In a recent podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, he revealed how Malik, whom he sees as a mentor, would often lie to him and pretend to be Abu Malik (Anu’s younger brother) when he called the veteran for work. Quoted by the Free Press Journal, he recalled, “Anu ji naatak karte the. He would pretend that he is Abu. He would say, ‘Anu ji nahi hain, main unka chota bhai Abu bol raha hu’. For those who don’t know, in an earlier interview, the 50-year-old singer had spoken about how he was scared of Malik as the latter would often bully him. He added that he had learned a lot from Anu and that the latter is his guruji. He also added how the composer utilised his voice to the fullest.

In the same interveiw, the playback singer also recalled his first audition. Talking about it, he shared that it was in 1991 when he had gone to Usha Khanna for an audition when he saw Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu coming and singing there. He added, “They asked me to sit. But I kept standing. I kept standing for 7 hours. I thought what if the door opens and they see that I am sitting…no, I kept standing because I thought that would leave a good impression.”
